Nestled in the shadow of the Aethros Mountains, Eisenwerk thrives as the pulsing heart of industry and innovation within the Varisian Empire. Its skyline, dominated by towering smokestacks and the constant glow of forges, mirrors the relentless drive of its inhabitants towards progress. This city, powered by steam and coal, is the birthplace of the empire's most formidable technological and military advancements, from steam-powered behemoths to intricate mechanisms of war and peace.

Population.

The city's diverse population of approximately 120,000 citizens is made up of humans who dominate various roles from engineers to laborers, dwarves valued for their unmatched craftsmanship in metallurgy and construction, and gnomes, whose inventive minds lead the charge in experimental technology. Elves, halflings, and other races each contribute unique skills that enhance the city’s technological endeavors, such as integrating arcane magic with machinery or specializing in fine mechanics.

Races.

  • Humans: 60%

  • Dwarves: 20%

  • Gnomes: 10%

  • Other (Elves, Halflings, etc.): 10%

Government.

Eisenwerk is governed by the Council of Master Artificers, a group of the city’s most distinguished engineers and inventors. They are appointed based on their contributions to the city's industrial might and are responsible for overseeing production, innovation, and ensuring that Eisenwerk continues to fuel the empire's expansion.

Defenses.

The city's defenses are as much a showcase of its technological might as they are a protective measure. Automated steam turrets guard the walls, patrolled by mechanized sentinels. The Aethros Gate, a marvel of engineering, serves as the primary entrance, capable of sealing shut with reinforced steel plates during times of siege.

Key Locations.

  • The Great Foundry: The heart of Eisenwerk’s industrial district, where the empire’s weapons and machinery are forged.

  • The Gear District: A bustling market where inventors and tinkerers sell their wares, from household gadgets to experimental military equipment.

  • The Steamgard Academy: An institution dedicated to educating the next generation of engineers and artificers, blending theoretical knowledge with practical application.

  • The Aether Core Reactor: A guarded facility that powers the entire city, harnessing the magical ore Aether.

  • The Iron Plaza: At the bustling heart of Eisenwerk lies the Iron Plaza, a vast, open space surrounded by grandiose buildings made from steel and glass. The plaza serves as a communal gathering spot for celebrations, public announcements, and demonstrations of the latest technological marvels. Its centerpiece, a massive, steam-powered clock tower, stands as a testament to the city's engineering prowess and punctuality.

  • Vault of Innovations: This museum and exhibition hall is dedicated to the history of technological advancement within the Varisian Empire. It houses ancient artifacts, retired machinery, and interactive displays of significant inventions. The Vault of Innovations not only educates but inspires, with a special section for contemporary inventors to showcase their prototypes to potential investors and the public.

  • The Smogbound District: A less glamorous but vital part of the city, the Smogbound District is where the factories and foundries operate day and night. Here, the air is thick with smoke, and the streets are lined with the modest dwellings of factory workers. Despite its grim exterior, the district is a melting pot of cultures and innovations, with small workshops and taverns where many a brilliant idea has been scribbled on napkins.

  • The Steam Tunnels: Beneath the city lies a labyrinth of tunnels that distribute steam power from the Aether Core Reactor to every corner of Eisenwerk. These tunnels are strictly off-limits to the public due to their danger and complexity. However, rumors persist of secret meetings, illegal experiments, and hidden treasures within their depths, attracting the brave or foolish who dare navigate their steamy corridors.

  • Artificer’s Row: A prestigious neighborhood where the most successful engineers and inventors reside in luxury. The architecture here blends functionality with opulence, incorporating elements of steam technology into the very buildings themselves. Artificer’s Row is also home to private laboratories and think tanks, where the minds behind Eisenwerk’s greatest innovations continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible.

  • The Coal Ward: As vital as the Aether Core Reactor is to Eisenwerk, the city’s reliance on coal is undeniable. The Coal Ward is where the coal from the Aethros Mountains is processed, stored, and distributed. This district is characterized by its vast coal yards, processing plants, and the ever-present coal dust that covers everything. Despite its industrial nature, the Coal Ward has a robust community of workers and families who have adapted to life amidst the coal dust.

Quest Prompts.

Quest 1: The Cogs of Espionage (Levels 4-6)

A prototype weapon, capable of changing the course of the ongoing war, has been stolen from The Great Foundry. Rumors point towards espionage by a rival nation, keen on undermining the Varisian Empire's military superiority. The players are hired for their discreetness and resourcefulness to retrieve the stolen prototype before it can be replicated or used against the empire.

Objectives:

  • Infiltrate underground networks and black markets in The Gear District to gather information on the prototype’s whereabouts.

  • Confront various factions within the criminal underworld to locate the prototype, following a trail of destruction left behind by the weapon being used in untrained hands.

  • Recover the weapon from a heavily guarded clandestine workshop, deciding whether to bring the perpetrators to justice or leverage their skills for the empire’s benefit.

Quest 2: The Reactor's Heartbeat (Levels 5-7)

The Aether Core Reactor, lifeblood of Eisenwerk, begins to malfunction, threatening the city with catastrophic energy surges. The Council of Master Artificers suspects sabotage, potentially linked to internal dissent against the empire’s war efforts. Players must navigate the political and literal minefields to repair the reactor and uncover the truth behind the sabotage.

Objectives:

  • Work alongside the city's top engineers to stabilise the reactor through a series of technical challenges, while fending off elementals being conjured from the wild magic and energy.

  • Investigate the cause of the malfunction. Leads could point to a mundane cause, or could potentially uncover a web of intrigue that tests the players’ allegiances to the Empire.

  • Face the moral dilemma: The Aether Core Reactor is a powerful tool, and its destruction could provide an opportunity in the war. If it was sabotaged, the players could side with the saboteurs, or prove their allegiance to the Empire by eliminating the threat in silence.
